What is Mental Health?

Mental health is important because it helps us think clearly, manage stress, and build healthy relationships. Caring for our mental health honors God and supports a balanced, whole life.

Importance of Mental Health

Mental health includes your emotional, psychological, and spiritual well-being. It affects how you think, feel, handle stress, and relate to others. Taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body.

Signs You May Need Mental Health Support 

  • Feeling sad, hopeless, or overwhelmed
  • Anxiety, constant worry, or panic
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Withdrawing from loved ones or church activities
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

SUPPORTING MENTAL HEALTH

  • Unique Challenges in Our Community

  • Stigma around “talking about mental health”
  • Pressure to appear strong (“Strong Black Woman/Man”)
  • Historical mistrust of healthcare systems
  • Stress from racism, discrimination, and inequality

  • Seek Professional Help Getting Help is Strength

  • Talk to a trusted pastor, ministry leader, or counselor
  • Reach out to licensed therapists (especially culturally competent providers)
  • If in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline)
